To know if a doula is right for you, it is first helpful to know what a doula has to offer you. There are several different types of doulas who help families at various different stages of their birth journeys. The most commonly know types are birth and postpartum doulas.
A birth doula prepares families for labor and teaches them the essential things that will help them have a healthy pregnancy, navigate labor, and prepare for postpartum. Birth doulas are present with a family during labor providing emotional, physical, and information support. They stay with a family up to approximately 2 hours postpartum to ensure mother, baby, and partner are recovering well receiving adequate attention and care.
A postpartum doula helps families adjust to life after having a baby and overcome challenges immediately postpartum. Eating, sleeping, and newborn care can be a challenge for new parents. Mothers who receive postpartum support services often have an easier time adjusting to the demands of caring for a newborn. Postpartum support usually covers the period of birth up to 12 weeks postpartum.
Doulas may also offer additional services and specialties such as specialized childbirth or newborn care education, lactation support, referrals to community resources, placenta services, nutritional services, massage therapy, acupuncture, herbal medicine, fertility services ect.
